DAMIANA: Turnera Diffusa
Damiana is a small, aromatic plant with yellow-orange flowers. It grows in the tropical regions of South and Central America, such as Brazil, Mexico and California. The tribal Indians in South America have known of the medicinal use of Damiana for a long time. As tea it is used against nervousness, flaccid muscles, stomach-ache and painful menstruation. Damiana is also used for pleasure. The Maya's have been smoking Damiana for this reason for centuries.
- Active elements: It is not known which substance causes the psycho-active werking, only that it must be in the plant's oils.
- Effect: The psycho-active effect of Damiana is often compared to that of marihuana, although it is less strong. The mildly afrodisiac and euphoric effect lasts about an hour to an hour and a half. Regular use can stimulate the sexual organs.
- Use: Damiana can be used as tea, it can be smoked (a less harmful and cheaper alternative for tobacco) or you can make an infusion with alcohol. The latter is the most effective. To make tea, use two or three dessert spoons in a half-litre of water. Bring to the boil and then leave to draw for five minutes. Damiana tea is often taken in combination with smoking dried Damiana leaves in a water-pipe. This increases the effect.
- Side Effect: Although not proven, it is thought that heavy and prolonged use may cause liver damage.
